People have asked me why I call Flare a "slate blue Merle" not just a blue Merle. The AKC
only lists blue or red merle and does not have a identification between slate blues and
regular blue merle which is technically a black dog. Just because a "blue " merle has grey or
blue spots on his/her body does not mean he or she carries the blue gene. A Merle's color is
defined by the darkest color on the dog. Flare has NO black on her entire body and her
nose is blue. Technically she is a blue dog with the merle pattern.
